© NASA Earth Observations Database

September 1996: Beaver and Table Rock Lakes are reservoirs located on the Ozark Plateau. Beaver Lake, located just to the left of center on the image, is the newest of the “Great Lakes of the White River”. The lake covers over 70 miles (113 km) through the rolling forested Ozark Mountains, and has nearly 450 miles (725 km) of shoreline. The dam that formed Beaver Lake was completed in 1966. The average depth of the Beaver Lake is 60 feet (18 meters). Table Rock Lake is visible near the top center of the image. The lake also winds its way through the gently rolling forested Ozark Mountains. Table Rock Lake has nearly 800 miles (1288 km) of shoreline. The dam that formed Table Rock Lake was completed in 1961. Both Beaver and Table Rock Lakes control floods and generate hydroelectric power. Both lakes also offer excellent recreational activities. A portion of the Boston Mountains of Central Arkansas can be seen in the bottom right portion of the image. The small cities of Springdale and Rogers along Highway 71 in northwestern Arkansas are discernible in the lower left portion of the image. The resort city of Branson, Missouri is discernible just to the right of the upper center of the image.
