Indonesia: Bangka Island, Musi River

© NASA Earth Observations Database

April 1991: This west-looking view shows the swampy coastal plain of southeast Sumatra and the northwest portion of Bangka Island (lower right). The Bangka Strait (10 miles-16km) wide is visible from the bottom center of the image. Bangka Island, 136 miles (218 km) long and 69 miles (111 km) wide is located off the southeast coast of Sumatra in the Java Sea. The island is one of the world’s leading tin producers. Crops grown include rice, pepper, and coffee. The sediment-laden Talak and Banjuasin Rivers are visible to the left of center on the image. East of these two rivers is the v-shaped delta of the Musi River. Rubber and a variety of tropical crops are raised along the river’s course.
