A firewall is a system that is designed to prevent unauthorized access to/from a private network. It can be implemented in both hardware and software, or a combination of both. Firewalls are often used to prevent unauthorized Internet users from accessing private networks connected to the Internet, especially Intranets. All messages entering/leaving the intranet pass the firewall, which check each message and block those that do not meet defined security criteria.
