A CGI program is a program designed to work with data that conforms to special specifications. CGIs are written in programming languages like Perl, C, Visual Basic, or Java. These programs are the most common way for servers to interact with the users in a dynamic way. Many HTML pages that contain e.g. forms, use a CGI program to process the data once it is submitted to the server (e.g. online suveys). A CGI-program is actually running on the Web server; therefore a CGI-program is a server-side solution.
