A detector for counting or detecting high energy charged particles. The particle passes through a liquid or a gas, and the light emitted as Cherenkov radiation is registered by a photomultiplier tube. Cherenkov radiation is produced when a charged particle passes through a medium at a speed greater than the speed of light in that medium.
