Black basalt stone discovered in 1799 in Philae, Egypt by Napoleon's team of archaeologists. The stone was inscribed by Egyptian priests in 196 B.C. with identical texts in hieroglyphics, the demotic, and Greek.
This provided the French historian Jean-Francois Champollion with the final clues that enabled him to decipher the hieroglyphs of the Rosetta Stone and unlock the secrets of the civilisation of ancient Egypt.
