For the manufacturing and mining sectors, it is a measure of activity derived by subtracting the cost of materials, supplies, containers, purchased fuel and electricity, and contract work from the value of shipments (products manufactured or mined plus receipts for services rendered). This calculation is adjusted by adding the value added by merchandising (mark-up) and the net change in finished goods and work-in-progress inventories. For industries in which value of production is collected instead of value of shipments, value added is adjusted by the change in work-in-progress inventories. Deflated to 1987 constant dollars using GPO deflator.
