A lower-level network protocol, originally developed by Xerox Corporation, used to communicate between computers in a local network (LAN). Communication takes place by means of modulation of radio frequency signals. On an Ethernet, interface cards share a common cable by listening before transmission and transmitting only during a break in traffic, a technique called 'carrier-sense multiple access w/collision detection (CSMA/CD)'.
