Description: SS Gopher State is a Military Sealift Command Prepositioning ship carrying equipment and supplies to support a U.S. Army heavy brigade in case of a potential continegency in Southwest Asia or the Far East. Gopher State is stationed in Guam and is essentially a floating warehouse which along with the 12 other Army prepositioning ships contains all the equipment and supplies needed to support up to 6,000 U.S. Army personnel for 15 days and sustain contingency units arriving in the first 38 days of an operation.

Features: SS Gopher State has four 30-ton auxiliary cranes meaning it is self-sustaining — capable of loading or unloading cargo from itself or an adjacent vessel or pier.

Background: SS Gopher State is a converted container ship named in honor of the state of Minnesota. Gopher State was converted in 1987 and is owned by the Maritime Administration and operated by Interocean-Ugland Corporation. In 1994, Gopher State was activated from the Ready Reserve Force to serve as a Prepositioning ship in Diego Garcia.
