Description: SS Potomac and SS American Osprey are two of the three Military Sealift Command Prepositioning ships carrying oil for the Defense Logistics Agency. Potomac operates out of Diego Garcia while American Osprey operates out of Guam and Saipan.
Features: SS Potomac is a tanker outfitted with an offshore petroleum discharge system. Potomac can deliver 173,000 barrels of JP-5 fuel from up to four miles offshore through its integrated OPDS. The first OPDS tanker delivered, Potomac has the prototype OPDS equipment installed. SS American Osprey is also an OPDS tanker with a 235,000-barrel capacity.
Background: SS Potomac was built in 1957 by Sun Shipbuilding and assigned to the Afloat Prepositioning Force in 1991. The ship is operated by Bay Ship Management and owned by MARAD. SS American Osprey was built in 1958 and was acquired by MARAD in 1984. This ship is also operated by Bay Ship Management.
