Severe weather is expected to affect more than 10 percent of the area. A high risk is rare, and implies an unusually dangerous situation and usually the possibility of a major severe weather outbreak. (See slight risk, moderate risk, convective outlook.)

Recent days on which a high risk for severe thunderstorms was forecast include November 10, 2002 (Ohio Vally/Southeast Outbreak), May 04, 2003 (East Kansas/west Missouri Outbreak), May 08, 2003 (Moore, Oklahoma's second violent tornado in 4 years) and May 30, 2004 (Widespread tornadoes and damaging straight-line winds across parts of the Mississippi and Ohio valleys).
